An updated version of one of the classic Apple Valley brevet routes with some better roads and some new interesting highlights. This route heads SE from Apple Valley, through Lake Byllesby Park and past the dam and Mill Towns Trail to the control in Cannon Falls. From there the route climbs out of Cannon Falls, drops into and out of another pretty valley then heads east before going south to a 2 mile gravel stretch that puts you on the Goodhue Pioneer Trail that will take you down to the western edge of Zumbrota before heading west to Wanamingo and a Cenex control with a great sandwich deli in the back of the store. From there the route heads north through Wanamingo then west past the impressive and still active Holden Church in the trees before heading north down into the historic Sogn Valley, then up the Sogn hill before heading north back to the Cannon Falls control and finishing in Apple Valley. Expect rolling terrain after Cannon Falls, with a good climb on the way out of town to get your heart rate up. Once you are up the Sogn hill, things get easier.
Services at the start include Caribou Coffee and, later in the day, three restaurants very close if you need to slake your thirst or replenish your depleted body.
